Dreams are my reality

June 11, 2009 |17:01 | Life of Dreams  By : Team X

Dreams are my realityIt's not difficult to see why a number of people have fallen in love with Nikorn Saetang's plays. They are simple but never easy. They are sweet but weighty. They are gentle and comforting. Nikorn is one of the few Thai theatre directors who consistently produce original scripts. He's a mature writer who has stepped out of the realm of "me, my feelings and me". Yet in a time when it's not very becoming to be sappy, he's not afraid to be sentimental. He doesn't shy away from speaking directly about love and other feelings that some of us would rather conceal with cynicism or nonchalance. All these qualities have come to define his troupe, 8 x 8 Theatre Group.

The company's latest creation, Wan Dab Fun (End Your Dream), also possesses the same charm and accessibility of its predecessors. However, in this production, written and directed by Nikorn, the visual palette bursts with new life and energy. Perhaps it has something to do with the larger new space, Democrazy Theatre Studio, which provides more flexibility than at the 8 x 8 Corner in Sam Yan, where he ran a cafe-cum-theatre before being evicted more than a year ago.

Dancing with the Stars TV Show Performance Recap and Judges Scores for Week 3 of Season 7

October 8, 2008 |15:26 | Life of Dreams  By : Team X

It seems like ‘Dancing with the Stars’ has been all about injuries this year. We started the season off with two injuries, and now we have had three more injuries since then.

Derek Hough had blacked out during rehearsal when he hit his head on the floor. Misty hurt her ankle, and so did Susan Lucci. Hopefully there will be no more injuries on season 7, otherwise everyone is going to be carrying around their lucky rabbits foot on the dance floor and in rehearsals.

Atif Aslam

April 11, 2008 |20:36 | Life of Dreams  By : Kaneta Babar

Muhammad Atif Aslam was born on 12th march 1983 in Wazirabad Gujranwala. Atif's kinder garden started in Model town Lahore at Kimberley Hall School. His first stage manifestation was in a fancy dress show at his school when he was in grade–1 where he performed as Imran Khan “ Captain of Pakistan Cricket Team”. Since then cricket was like a passion to him. He was never tired of playing cricket for hours in his car porch whether it is scorching sun outside or even raining. At that time he did not use to listen any kind of songs. At the age of 9 in 1991 he shifted to Rawalpindi/Islamabad where he continued his studies in Saint Pauls School. He started playing Basket Ball and he used to lead his school team for matches. Atif came back to Lahore in 1995 where he continued his studies in Divisional Public School Model Town. For his immense passion for cricket he was selected in his school team as a fast bowler. Atif cleared his 10th grade in 14 years of age with a distinctive edge that he has always been the youngest boy in the class because of his double promotions while he was in Kimberley Hall. Atif started his HSc in PAF College Lahore. Cricket was all the times with him. He was in his college team as well, where he presented his college in other cities. Beside his studies, he was putting his maximum time in practicing for professional cricket. During his college life he came across with some interest in music. His eldest brother was having a collection of more than 8,000 songs of almost all music genres. Un-intentionally he was developing a habit of listening to all kinds of music in his house. As a good learner he quickly grasped the control of voice but till that time he was not interested in singing, his passion was to enter in Pakistan cricket team as a fast bowler and he was right on track while practicing at the net at Shapes club Lahore where Imran Khan used to come and give tips to him for bowling. The twist in the story comes when one day he was singing with his friends at the college canteen. His friends insisted him to participate in the singing competition on Independence Day celebrations at PAF College Lahore and Sargodha in 1998. He performed there and won the competition. After HSc Atif Joined Punjab Institute of Computer Science Gulberg Campus. This time studies were much more demanding as compared to the previous ones. He had to sacrifice his time for the cricket. His hobby of singing continued when he entered the singing competition of his college. There were a total of 8 participants .The media team entered Atif's name in the competition at the eleventh hour and he won the competition by singing a hit number Duur of Strings Band He kept on winning these competitions every semester until he announced that he will no longer participate in next competitions so that someone else can also win the competition. He encountered Goher at his college who had good interest in Music & was a good, talented guitarist. Together they used to practice a lot and started doing mini concerts for their friend. Atif used to sing Junoon's and String's songs at the concerts. The volume of cheers of audience kept on increasing. They performed concerts for their college, McDonalds and some other restaurants as well. Atif recorded the legendary song “AADAT” at Mekal Hassan's Studio. Mekal injected his professionalism in the song to make it worth listening time after time. Atif formed the band and named the band as “JAL” which means water, the essence of life. The song got popularity on different musical websites on Pakistan. The song was also being on aired on major Radio channels of Pakistan like FM100, FM 105 etc. “Umer Anwar” from Karachi approached Atif for making the video of “AADAT”. Aadat's video was shot in one day in a warehouse at Karachi. The basic theme of the video was to attract people to listen to this song, which will vanish their sorrows and then make them happy. A girl who acted as an angel in the video was distributing this message to people to listen to this song. Atif was making waves in the industry. God has been very very kind to Atif. By the Grace of God his video was released in December on “ARY THE MUSIC” and then it rocked almost all the channels. Atif released his first album Jal Pari on 18th July 2004 all over the nation by the country's leading record label, Sound Master and IC records & Alhumdolillah the results declared it as the best selling album of the year within just 5 months of the release and it is still continuing. Because of the eternal mercifulness of Allah who gave the kind of continuous love of people to Atif , lime light, interviews, fans, autographs, snaps, concerts, get-togethers, traveling all came to him at once and Atif was really stretched up for all this because in the mean time he had the final exams of BCS and he cleared his Bachelorz in Computer Science ( hons) from University of Central Punjab. Performing live is the real test of any singer and Alhumdolillah people believe that Atif is one of the best live singers in the nation. Atif has done hundreds of live shows with local as well as international artists all over the globe for a lot of brands. Atif's song WOH LAMHEY which he sang for the Bollywood movie “ Zeher” in 2005 is being considered among the ten best ever green songs of the Bollywood industry doing a business of One million Dollar plus only in India in terms of sales. This song opened the doors of bollywood for Atif and he is now one of the few singers of the nation who are doing play back singing in bollywood which is indeed a national pride for us. His 2nd song in bollywood “Aadat” made people addicted to his voice in the biggest nation of the world. Third song “Teray Bin” is also being considered as one of the most touching and heart melting numbers of the year 2006. Which Idol Will Fall First?

If this was the best top 24 ever, then it stands to reason that this is the best top 12 ever. I may be drinking the kool-aid because, to my eyes, this top 12 looks as strong, top to bottom, as I’ve seen. David, is this the best top 12 ever?

It definitely has some strong competitors, but I never like to talk about the strongest group ever – or really anything as an overall group. There are some contestants who are super-strong, and others who aren’t. I think the winner may already be obvious, but we know that what appears obvious now won’t be as apparent in a couple months. So we’ll just take it a week at a time. (As always, when David is speaking, it’s in boldface.)

Last week, we said goodbye to Luke Menard and Kady Malloy. A surprise to no one – not even them, based on the looks on their faces.

Indeed, we both picked Luke to go before their performances, and I picked Kady as well.

Pakistan Rivals Join to Fight Musharraf

March 10, 2008 |17:27 | Activities | Arts | Gossips | Life of Dreams | Politics  By : Team X

The leaders of the two major political parties here, in an unexpectedly strong show of unity against President Pervez Musharraf, agreed Sunday that they would reinstate the judges fired by the president and would seek to strip him of crucial powers.

The accord created a direct threat to Mr. Musharraf because the restored judges could act on petitions challenging the validity of his re-election last October when he was still head of the army. Mr. Musharraf’s critics contend he dismissed the judges last November for the very reason that he was fearful they would invalidate his presidency.

The deal, announced by Asif Ali Zardari, the leader of the biggest party, the Pakistan Peoples Party, and Nawaz Sharif, the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-N, also dashed the hopes of the Bush administration that Parliament would work in harmony with Mr. Musharraf.

The White House considers Mr. Musharraf a favored ally in the American fight against militants aligned with Al Qaeda and the Taliban who have regrouped in Pakistan, but Mr. Musharraf is deeply unpopular here.

Mr. Musharraf had no comment on the accord. As of late Sunday in Washington, the State Department and the White House also had no comment.

Ex-model Waris Dirie found in Brussels

March 8, 2008 |17:42 | Activities | Gossips | Life of Dreams | Movies | Out and About | Personal Stories | Showbiz  By : Team X

Police on Friday found Waris Dirie, three days after the Somali-born model who launched a worldwide campaign against female genital mutilation had vanished.

Dirie, 43, appeared to be in good health and was being questioned by police about the disappearance, said Estelle Arpigny, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office.

She declined to give further details, saying it was unclear what had happened since Dirie vanished early Wednesday. Belgian media reports said police found her Friday afternoon walking the Brussels' Grand Place square.

Hours earlier, police had announced they were launching a nationwide search for the former model, who had last been seen getting into a cab after a mix-up over a hotel.

Dirie gained international fame as a model posing in Chanel ads and acting in the 1987 James Bond movie "The Living Daylights" before launching her campaign against female genital mutilation in 1996.

She shocked the world with a best-selling book "Desert Flower" that described how her genitals were sliced off with a dirty razor blade without anesthesia, and then stitched together.

Now a U.N. goodwill ambassador, she was due to speak on genital mutilation in Brussels at two conferences on women's rights organized by the European Union, including one on Thursday attended by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

News of Dirie's disappearance came a week after French police said they had found the body of another former model of African origin who had campaigned against female genital mutilation. Guinean-born Katoucha Niane was discovered floating in the River Seine in Paris.

Pablo Picasso

February 8, 2008 |17:50 | Life of Dreams  By : Kaneta Babar

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso showed artistic ability at an early age, and when he began to study art seriously in Barcelona and Madrid, he was already a skilled painter. In the early 1900s he visited and eventually settled in Paris, where he was part of a vibrant artistic community that included Gertrude Stein. Although greatly influenced by other artists in Europe and beyond, Picasso was inventive and prolific, and early in his career earned a worldwide reputation as an innovator. Along with Henri Matisse, he is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. His enormous body of work spans so many years that art experts generally separate his career into distinct phases, such as the Blue Period, the Rose Period and his most famous contribution to modern art, Cubism. Picasso, unlike so many before him, was an international celebrity as well as an important contributor to the world of art. Some people never die even after their death and Picasso is one of them even now the art lovers in this world respect and learn a lot from his art work.

Its a Hot night for Cool charity concert

January 8, 2008 |15:13 | Activities | Arts | Gossips | Life of Dreams | Music | Out and About | Showbiz  By : Team X

While rock stars are good at raising money and public consciousness, star-studded lineups usually suffer. Few performers fare well when removed from their comfort zones and sharing sound engineers and equipment, a situation that usually results in hastily delivered second-rate music.

Leave it to Boston’s finest to break the pattern. Sunday’s Hot Stove Cool Music fund-raiser at the Paradise was about as good as it gets for a charity gig. Led by an array of local rock royalty, the music was hotter than the stove.

While ticket holders perused silent auction items in the Paradise Lounge (mostly baseball memorabilia), the vocal-less Elan Trotman Band kick-started the main room with “Play That Funky Music,” featuring Trotman’s fluid sax. He returned as music director/keyboardist for ex-Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo’s largely unplugged set. While Arroyo’s Eddie Vedder-inspired nasal bellow isn’t anything original, a string quartet added unexpected seriousness to his performance, which included a cover of Augustana’s “Boston” that practically brought the house down.

Stoughton folkie-turned-Nashville star Lori McKenna, former Letters to Cleo vocalist Kay Hanley, Dear Leader and Eli “Paperboy” Reed (who also played the so-called preview Hot Stove show the night before) all served up strong, inspired sets that transcended the charity lineup curse.

Bill Gates Steps Down In 2008 From Microsoft

January 7, 2008 |22:39 | Life of Dreams  By : Kaneta Babar

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is stepping down from his full-time role at Microsoft to spend more time on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Microsoft announced the two year transition plan for Gates shortly after the close of U.S. financial markets. Ray Ozzie will assume Bill Gates' job title of Chief Software Architect after recently completing his team's integration of Groove Networks into Office 2007. Bill Gates will be 52 years-old when he steps down from Microsoft and he is currently worth about $50 billion according to Forbes. The current life expectancy for a male in the United States is 75 years, but healthy billionaires with good medical care are living longer lives in good condition. If you were 52 years-old and worth $50 billion would you go to work every day when you've been all over the earth and seen the difference you could make? Bill Gates is stepping down from Microsoft and will no longer play a day-to-day role in creating the latest smart watches or new digitized handwriting techniques. Instead Gates will be working on fighting worldwide issues such as malaria, currently responsible for about 11% of child deaths in developing nations. I think Bill Gates' transition away from Microsoft is a really good thing for him as well as the world. Microsoft will lose some celebrity power both inside and outside the company, and will need to revamp marketing campaigns around the new executives. Microsoft employees can currently author ThinkWeek papers to propose new products and initiatives for consideration by executives. Historically Bill Gates has read these papers during a week-long retreat once a quarter to plan new business strategy. I expect Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie may share this internal thought leadership duty in the future. Bill Gates is a recognized name and face throughout the world and now those recognitions may be more evenly distributed . Bill Gates is one of the most influential people in the world. He is cofounder of one of the most recognized brands in the computer industry with nearly every desk top computer using at least one software program from Microsoft. According to the Forbes magazine, Bill Gates is the richest man in the world and has held the number one position for many years. Gates was born and grew up in Seattle, Washington USA. His father, William H. Gates II was a Seattle attorney and his mother, Mary Maxwell Gates was a school teacher and chairperson of the United Way charity. Gates and his two sisters had a comfortable upbringing, with Gates being able to attend the exclusive secondary "Lakeside School". Bill Gates started studying at Harvard University in 1973 where he met up with Paul Allen. Gates and Allen worked on a version of the programming language BASIC, that was the basis for the MITS Altair (the first microcomputer available). He did not go on to graduate from Harvard University as he left in his junior year to start what was to become the largest computer software company in the world; Microsoft Corporation.

Bill Gates and the Microsoft Corporation
"To enable people and businesses throughout the world to realize their full potential." Microsoft Mission Statement . After dropping out of Harvard Bill Gates and his partner Paul Allen set about revolutionizing the computer industry. Gates believed there should be a computer on every office desk and in every home.  In 1975 the company Micro-soft was formed, which was an abbreviation of microcomputer software. It soon became simply "Microsoft"® and went on to completely change the way people use computers.  Microsoft helped to make the computer easier to use with its developed and purchased software, and made it a commercial success. The success of Microsoft began with the MS-DOS computer operating system that Gates licensed to IBM. Gates also set about protecting the royalties that he could acquire from computer software by aggressively fighting against all forms of software piracy, effectively creating the retail software market that now exists today. This move was quite controversial at the time as it was the freedom of sharing that produced much innovation and advances in the newly forming software industry. But it was this stand against software piracy, that was to be central in the great commercial success that Microsoft went on to achieve.

Bill Gates Criticism
With his great success in the computer software industry also came many criticisms. With his ambitious and aggressive business philosophy, Gates or his Microsoft lawyers have been in and out of courtrooms fighting legal battles almost since Microsoft began. The Microsoft monopoly sets about completely dominating every market it enters through either acquisition, aggressive business tactics or a combination of them. Many of the largest technology companies have fought legally against the actions of Microsoft, including Apple Computer, Netscape, Opera, WordPerfect, and sun Microsystems.

Bill Gates Net Worth
With an estimated wealth of $53 billion in 2006, Bill Gates is the richest man in the world and he should be starting to get used to the number spot as he has been there from the mid-ninties up until now. The famous investor Warren Buffett is gaining on Gates though with an estimated $46 billion in 2006. Microsoft hasn't just made Bill Gates very wealthy though. According to the Forbes business magazine in 2004 Paul Allen, Microsoft cofounder was the 5th richest man in the world with an estimated $21 billion. While Bill Gates' long time friend and Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer was the 19th richest man in the world at $12.4 billion.

Bill Gates Philanthropy
Being the richest man in the world has also enabled Gates to create one of the world's largest charitable foundations. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has an endowment of more than $28 billion, with donations totaling more than $1 billion every year. The foundation was formed in 2000 after merging the "Gates Learning Foundation" and "William H. Gates Foundation". Their aim is to "bring innovations in health and learning to the global community". Bill Gates continues to play a very active role in the workings of the Microsoft Company, but has handed the position of CEO over to Steve Ballmer. Gates now holds the positions of "Chairman" and "Chief Software Architect". He has started that he plans to take on fewer responsibilities at Microsoft and will eventually devote all his time to the Foundation. In 2006, the second richest man in the world, Warren Buffett pledged to give much of his vast fortune to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bill Gates Receives a KBE

In March 2005 William H. Gates received an "honorary" knighthood from the queen of England. Gates was bestowed with the KBE Order (Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his services in reducing poverty and improving health in the developing countries of the world.
After the privately held ceremony in Buckingham Palace with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Gates commented on the recognition..
"I am humbled and delighted. I am particularly pleased that this honor helps recognize the real heroes our foundation (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) supports to improve health in poor countries. Their incredible work is helping ensure that one day all people, no matter where they are born, will have the same opportunity for a healthy life, and I'm grateful to share this honor with them." The KBE Order of the British Empire is the second highest Order given out, but it is only an honorary knighthood as only citizens that are British or a part of the Commonwealth receive the full Order. This means that Gates does not become Sir Bill Gates. Bill Gates lives near Lake Washington with his wife Melinda French Gates and their three children. Interests of Gates include reading, golf and playing bridge.
