Bollywood Film Review: Agneepath

Posted in : Movies

(added 2 days ago)

Bollywood Film Review AgneepathI recently got an opportunity to watch Karan Johar’s revival of Agneepath, a project that was originally done by his father a couple of decades ago. While the original film had been a colossal flop, to say the least, the re-make of the film was nothing short of an experience of a life-time.

During the course of the film, I pretty much experienced all sorts of emotions. Joy and sadness kept triggering a smile or a tiniest drop of tear. However, the most strong and prominent emotion that I felt was anger. This did not have anything to do with the make of the film. Instead, it was attributed to some of the characters that Karan Johar and film-director Karan Malhotra had managed to present a bit too well. These characters included the Kancha, played by Sanjay Dutt, and Rauf Lala that was being played
by Rishi Kapoor.

If there were any images of Sanjay Dutt’s “Munna Bhai MBBS” in my brain, his role of Kacha completely eradicated them from my mind. From the time he made his first appearance in the film to the time he made an exit, courtesy of Hrithik Roshan who was playing the role of Vijay Deenanth Chauhan, originally played by Amitabh Bachan, the character of Kancha was disgusting in the sense that one could feel real hatred for him.

His loathsome personality and lack of humanity depicted him as a demon. Unfortunately, Sanjay Dutt’s excellent portrayal of the character turned out to be a boon for him as the entire hatred that one felt for Kancha was unconsciously shifted to Sanjay Dutt. Even to this day, images of a bald-headed Sanjay Dutt keep flashing in my head, making me wish I never get to set my sight on him again.

Another character that was extremely well done and as a result filled me up with fury was that of Rauf Lala’s. If Kacha was loathsome, Rauf Lala was someone I felt like killing with my own hands without caring about the consequences. Being the underworld king of Mumbai, Rauf Lala dealt not only in drugs but sold young girls to the highest bidders from around the world, majority of which were not-so-subtly shown as Muslims. Rishi Kapoor’s role as a cuddly father in “Hum Tum” and “Namastay London” became but a distant memory as he acted as a heartless and inhumane dealer of drugs and females.

The plot of the movie may not have been as strong as one would have liked, but Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt and Rishi Kapoor indeed took the movie to new heights. Rather than the good, it was evil that worked out wonders for this movie. The hero of the film was indeed a strong character, but the impact made by the villains was indeed a show-stealer.

JODI BREAKERS item song: Bipasha Basu is truly hot!

Posted in : Showbiz

(added 18 days ago)

Bipasha Basu’s latest song will surely give stiff competition to Katrina Kaif’s Chikni Chameli, especially since the Bengali babe has managed what even Kat couldn’t – get a song named after her! Bipasha’s item song in Jodi Breakers is titled Bipasha and is for those who want to learn what Bipasha has to teach. What? The language of love! We are not saying that! That’s how the song goes, honest.

JODI BREAKERS item song Bipasha Basu is truly hot

From the short teaser, it seems this club song has good beats and rhythm by Salim-Suleiman. However, it is uncannily similar to Shakira’s Beautiful Liar, don’t you think? Anyway, what intrigued us though were Bipasha’s moves. Choreographers Bosco and Caesar have really outdone themselves. If Katrina heaved her bosom for Chikni Chameli, Bipasha goes one step further and does something totally magical. We are not telling you what it is! Watch it for yourself and tell us if you like it.

Kajal wants to do a Charles Angles

Posted in : Showbiz

(added 19 days ago)

Kajal wants to do a Charles AnglesCharming girl Kajal Agarwal wants to do more than a sword-wielding princess' role that she did in Magadheera.

She wants to go the full hog on donning a girl who brandishes the rapier in style.  Yes, she wants to do a Charles Angles role if that ever comes her way.  She said this at a press meet held in Hyderabad yesterday.

Even as she made a bold wish known to the world, Kajal preferred not to talk about the smooching scene in Businessman.  "I don't want to talk much about that.  The scene was infused in the movie as per the need of the script" she shot back.

Kajal is totally in love with Mahesh's dekko acting performance in Businessman.

Saying that she was happy to have acted with him, the actress said she would like to see none but Mahesh in the Hindi remake as well.  "I can't imagine anyone else in the role."She had compliments for Puri Jagannadh.  "He made me portray both love and hate in the character."

The Best & Worst 'American Idol' Auditions of All Time

Posted in : Favorite TV Shows

(added 20 days ago)

The 11th season of American Idol premieres tonight (8/7c, Fox), and in the past 10 seasons we've seen a lot of incredible auditions and a lot of really, really mind-bogglingly awful ones.

The Best & Worst 'American Idol' Auditions of All Time

Since we're bound to see lots of lost souls belt out heinous renditions of pop songs tonight (how many people will attempt Adele's "Rolling in the Deep?"), we thought we'd gather some of the worst auditions in American Idol history to see how tonight's wannabes stack up. And because we actually like it better when Idol features the truly talented singers, we've also rounded up the best auditions of all time to remind you that there are always a few diamonds scattered among those rough audition rounds.

5. William Hung
William Hung's rendition of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" (complete with choreographed dance moves) during Idol's third season was so bad that it somehow became awesome. The judges couldn't stop laughing during his audition, but it was Hung who got the last laugh. He scored a record deal and went on to release three albums (Hung for the Holidays is our personal favorite).

4. Steven Theon
You knew that things weren't going to go well when ginger-haired Steven Theon compared himself to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. But his high-pitched version of "Bohemian Rhapsody" still managed to reach surprising levels of horribleness. The judges dissolved into fits of giggles pretty much immediately, and at one point Paula Adbul laughed so hard she snorted. High praise indeed.

3. James Lewis
James Lewis seems like a really nice guy and he's probably a great tour guide. But his low (loooooow), mumbling version of "Let My People Go" left no doubt that he would NOT be the next American Idol. Judge Randy Jackson knew he had to be cruel to be kind: "This is not your thing dawg. Singing's not your thing."

2. Isadora Furman
Palm reading, yoga, cowboy hats, sweet dance moves, this audition has it all! Isadora Furman's garbled, tamborine-accompanied rendition of "Lady Marmalade" was so strange that at one point guest judge Joan Collins had to remove her glasses just to make sure she wasn't seeing things.

1. Derek Stillings
Wild and wacky auditions have become the norm over Idol's 10 seasons, but we think Derek Stillings' boy band style try-out takes the cake for the worst ever. Why? Derek auditioned during season 1, so we know he wasn't faking it or trying to get on TV. The guy genuinely thought he could give Timberlake a run for his money, and we loved every awkward moment of it.

Best

5. Elliot Yamin
Elliot Yamin finished third on the fifth season of American Idol, and when you watch his perfectly in-tune version of Leon Russell's "A Song for You," it's easy to see why. The pharmacy clerk didn't look like a star, but he knew that he had a gift and he faced the judges with confidence. That's the stuff great auditions are made of.

4. Carrie Underwood
As soon as Carrie Underwood opened her mouth to let out the first sweet strains of "I Can't Make You Love Me," you knew this girl would be going places. Pair that with her cute blond curls, charming disposition, and copious footage of her traipsing around the farm, and you had the early makings of a future country queen.

3. Clay Aiken
Clay Aiken didn't look like a pop star and he didn't dress like a pop star, but he sure as hell sounded like a pop star when he auditioned for American Idol's second season. "You had some good talent [last season], but I think as far as the top 10 goes, I could have been up there. I could got the #1 or #2, at least," Aiken confidently told the judges. He ended up being right, of course.

2. Kelly Clarkson
The first ever American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson was a vocal powerhouse with a winning personality from her very first audition. She sang a gorgeous version of Etta James' "At Last" dressed in a homemade denim ensemble, then switched seats with Randy and playfully pretended to judge him. The rest, as they say, is history.

1. Kellie Pickler
Record execs often talk about the "It Factor," and Kellie Pickler definitely had "it" in her first Idol audition. From the way the 19-year-old encouraged the judges to "Pick Pickler!" to the way she belted out "With a Broken Wing," to the way she talked over Simon without realizing it, Kellie was delightfully refreshing. The small town cutie ended up finishing in 6th place that season and has gone on to have a very healthy country music career.

I would not have tampered with Agneepath: Danny Denzongpa

Posted in : Showbiz

(added 22 days ago)

I would not have tampered with Agneepath Danny DenzongpaThe original Kancha Cheena gets candid about Agneepath and a certain Parveen Babi Let's first have tea before starting the interview," says the thorough gentleman. A few minutes later, we are served tea and a delicious assortment of sandwiches. We are at the Juhu residence of Kancha Cheena of Mukul Anand's Agneepath. And Danny Denzongpa plays the consummate host as he talks about his illustrious career and a rocky emotional patch.

Why do we see you in few films and no parties?

I am doing films at my pace. I have just returned from the mountains; I have a farmhouse in Sikkim, and I spend a good part of the year there. During which time, I switch off my mobile, run around jungles and climb trees as I don't believe in exercising on machines behind closed doors.

I am happy (smiles). To be honest, I am getting several offers. But at this point in my life, I have to do something better than what I have done before or something radically different. I don't want to disappoint my fans.

And you have many fans...

Well, sometime ago, a lady who claimed to be my wife stood the entire night, in the rain, outside my bungalow. Then there was this journalist who fixed up an interview and came home! Half way through our chat, I sensed something fishy. I cornered him and he said he was a fan.

Which is the role that you cherish the most?

While you might think of Kaalicharan or Dhund or Agneepath, I would say it is my role in a Bengali film Lal Kuthi, which ran for more than 60 weeks. I also enjoyed my recent role in Frozen, a very believable film without any shor sharaba.

My survival as an actor doesn't depend on how good I am as an actor; it depends on whether my producers and distributors make money. In my case, they did. And I got branded in typical roles.

Which brings me to the most important question: Your character Kancha Cheena is being played by Sanjay Dutt in K Jo's Agneepath.

Sanjay's getup is far different from what I sported. He has flair and he must have essayed the role in his own style. If I was asked to do Kancha Cheena again, I would play it differently.

Do you think that a masterpiece like Agneepath should be tampered with?

Well, remakes have set the cash registers ringing, haven't they? (pauses). However, if I was a successful filmmaker, I wouldn't have tampered with Agneepath.

Can Hrithik Roshan pull off a Dinanath Chauhan as well as a Big B?

Hrithik is a capable actor. But invariably, there will be comparisons between him and Amitabh Bachchan. Howsoever well he might essay the role (and he might do so even better), people may not be satisfied as they might want him to do exactly the same things as Amitabh.

The interview will be incomplete if we don't talk about Parveen Babi.

Chali gayi bechari (looks at the ceiling). Barring Kabir Bedi, Mahesh Bhatt and I, who were her boyfriends at some point in her life, there was only Ranjeet and producer Harish Shah (who had cast her in Kaala Sona), who attended her funeral. That is when it struck me for the first time that this world is so fake.

Were you in touch with her before her death, I mean when she was unwell?

Well, we lived together for three to four years. Then, she fell in love with Kabir Bedi. We were not in touch after we broke up. But she used to barge into my house like a Queen Bee and my girlfriend Kim never liked it. I told her to stop coming. Later, she was in a relationship with Mahesh Bhatt.

Mahesh informed me that she was suffering from schizophrenia and that she didn't want to see a doctor. He asked me to convince her that she should seek a medical opinion. I went up to her apartment and had a chat with her and we started interacting again.

Suddenly, she started doubting me and then one evening, she said she wouldn't like to see me anymore. I thought it was best not to disturb her thereafter. I did try calling her a few times, but she did not respond. However, I did keep tabs on her health, courtesy Mahesh.

Gulshan Grover has dissuaded his son from joining Bollywood. Will you do the same?

No. I have left it to him. My son Rinzing is getting many offers, but the final decision about his career rests with him.
